Using a coconut oil hair treatment is becoming more and more popular as the best method for keeping hair healthy and repairing damaged hair. It is an easy process and you really only have to do it once a week, twice at the most.
Most people apply the coconut oil to hair as a solid state as it’s easier to work with, but you can melt first if preferred. If you’d rather have the oil melted first you can do so in the microwave using a microwave safe dish. The microwave may remove some nutrients so you can also melt oil with a modified double boiling method or just add to a small dish and set into a larger dish with hot water. With that said when it comes to a coconut oil hair treatment it really works best as a solid state because you can get the oil workable enough with your hands.
Now let’s apply the coconut oil to your hair. Take a scoop of oil and rub it between your hands and apply to your hair using your fingers to comb through all sections of your hair. You should massage generous amounts into all of your hair and don’t forget the tips and your roots. Using a dedicated brush also helps you evenly distribute the coconut oil throughout your hair. You might want to be wearing an old shirt because your shoulders may get oily during this process. Once your hair is completely saturated with coconut oil you’ll bring hair to a high ponytail and twist into a bun using a clip to hold into place. If needed, you can cover your hair with a shower cap, towel or even saran warp. You’ll want to keep the coconut oil in your hair for at least 2 hours, but for best results keep in overnight. If you’re keeping in your hair overnight you’ll definitely want to keep your head wrapped so you don’t get your pillow oily.
Next you’ll need to wash your hair and most of the time you will need to wash and rinse your hair a couple of times. Whether you’re only keeping the coconut oil in your hair for 2 hours or overnight it will most likely take a couple of washes to fully rinse out. Make sure you massage your head really well when washing as the oils will absorb into your scalp. You can use any type of shampoo, but preferably a brand that is sulfate free and creates lots of suds and lathers well.
There are no real requirements for drying your hair after all the coconut oil has been complete rinsed out. Just use your normal routine either air drying or with a hair dryer.
